Self-organizing line image classification with topology-free shape representation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page) 
(in English) A method for line-image representation and classification based on a higher rank of self-organizing is proposed. The proposed method is called TFSOM×SOM, which represents a direct product space organized by a set of Topology Free SOMs (TFSOMs) and a higher-order SOM. We applied TFSOM×SOM to a handwritten digit recognition task. The result shows that this method is effective, particularly when the number of training data is small.
