Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Video surveillance systems are being used in many places for the sake of safety and security. Especially in urban areas where crowd density is very high, crowd analysis has become an important topic of research. Although several methods have been proposed for crowd analysis, the challenging issue of understanding very crowded scenes under extremely cluttered environment is still far from expected results. In this paper, we propose a novel method namely STEM-RECIPE for crowd analysis. First, a video is represented by sequence of symbol. Each symbol is a pattern that models distribution of crowd density over region of interest (RoI)s. Then, common words are detected from this sequence. The bag of words with highest appearing frequency is named as STEM-RECIPE which has ability of modeling crowd activity based on reciprocal influence among crowd density of RoIs. The proposed method is applied for video query and event detection and has produced promising results.
