Nondestructive crack depth measurement is necessary for the evaluation of material strength in aging infrastructure such as atomic power plants. If the crack is open, its depth can be accurately measured. On the other hand, if the crack is closed because of residual stress or by oxide film, the crack depth could be underestimated or overlooked. Thus far, to simulate the SCC generated in atomic power plants, various formation methods were used. However, the difference of closure behavior between the formation methods has yet to be examined. Here we formed SCCs in the specimen with starting notch and pre-crack. Then we imaged them using linear phased array (PA) and subharmonic phased array for crack evaluation (SPACE). By comparing these results and the optically-observed cross section, we discussed the crack closure behavior depending on the formation method. |
