Portable sensory devices carried by humans - which are referred to as Human Probes - facilitate easy-to-use sensing and monitoring of urban areas. Human probes are usually integrated in mobile phones and use the mobile data network to upload sensory data. In this participatory sensing system, when each Human Probe individually senses and transmits information through the mobile data network, the sensing is inefficient in terms of cost and energy consumption. As a result, people will tend to avoid participating if they will end up loosing their battery charge and paying extra for data services. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm for Human-Probe sensing environments, in which the sensing activities carried out by each Human Probe, are adaptively adjusted depending on the number detected cooperative neighbors. The system helps in efficiently maintaining the desired high fidelity sensing resolution while minimizing energy consumption caused by sensing upload rates. We study the performance of the system by using simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that scheduled cooperative sensing is capable of providing high fidelity sensing while minimizing the upload redundancy of transmissions. |
