We carried out two experiments to specify optimal frequency band for the estimation of emotional state based on the wavelet frequency transformation analysis of pupil diameter variability. The workload required to the subjects was to categorize words presented auditorily. The load of the task was manipulated by the time interval of the stimulus presentation in Experiment 1 (time-based task) or by the number of category in Experiment 2 (cognitive-based task). Pupil diameter was monitored and recorded using an infrared video camera while observers were performing the tasks. In both experiments, the emotional state was significantly correlated with the frequency characteristic of pupil diameter variability and that of heart rate variability although the frequencies (LF/HF) correlated with the emotional state in each experiment were different from each other. Our results indicate the frequency characteristic of pupil diameter variability is useful as an index for evaluating real-time mental stress, and the optimum frequency of it depends on the kind of task. |
