Microstrip array antenna with liquid crystals loaded phase shifter

(in English) In recent years, the development of tunable functional devices in the microwave and millimeter wavebands is desired since the multimedia and multichannel services are delivered to the addressee through various transmission lines.
We have proposed liquid crystal loaded phase shifter in microwave band, whose phase shifting operation is based on anisotropy in dielectric permittivity for the applied electric field. In this report, as an application of the liquid crystal loaded phase shifter, we studied controlling the phase of microwave signal fed to the two-element array antenna which is composed of two microstrip antennas operating at 20GHz band. As a result, it is confirmed that the radiation directivity of the array antenna can be controlled by the applied electric field amplitude to the liquid crystal, both in the electromagnetic field simulation and the experiments.
