We demonstrate an all-optical ultra-short pulsewidth-tunable nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-to-return-to-zero (RZ) data format conversion using adiabatic soliton compression in Raman amplifier-based compressor and four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in fiber-based switch. The Raman amplifier-based compressor firstly generates ultra-short pulsewidth-tunable RZ clock train through the adiabatic soliton compression. A NRZ data signal is injected into fiber-based switch (AND gate) with this compressed RZ clock to convert RZ data signal. By changing the Raman pump power in Raman amplifier-based compressor, it is possible to tune the pulsewidth of the RZ converted signal from 15 ps to 2 ps. The bit-error rate (BER) characteristics of these ultra-short pulsewidth-tunable RZ outputs are also measured and show negative power penalties compared to back-to-back NRZ data signal. |
