Smart structures and materials in which an optical fiber acts as a sensor have many features in health monitoring, such as preventive maintenance, product efficiency improvement, and maintenance cost reduction. This paper describes the theory behind optical fiber sensing measurement and the latest technical trend in optical fiber sensing , especially in a Raman Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (ROTDR) used for distributed temperature measurement and a Brillouin-based distributed sensor (BOTDA, BOTDR, BOCDA, BOCDR) used for distributed strain and/or temperature measurement and FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensor used for multipoint sensing . |
