We developed a novel method to enhance the light emission efficiencies and rates of InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) and other various materials by using the coupling between the exciton and the surface plasmon (SP). This technique would provide high efficiency light emission at any wavelength if we can control the localizied and propagating modes of SPs. A huge enhancement of green emission of InGaN/GaN QW, which has been very difficult to achieve, was observed by employing metal nanostructures. The similar nanostructure-controlled SP coupling technique should be useful to develop very-thin and high-efficiency light resaving devices, namely, plasmonic solar cells. |
