Satellite Navigation System for Civil Aviation Using QZSS

(in English) The first satellite for the QZSS (quasi-zenith satellite system) is currently under the final preparation at the launch site. On the other hand, Japanese civil aviation administration has already been oparating the satellite navigation system for civil aviation called MSAS since 2007. These two systems were developed under the different history and specification, had a lot of technically common issues. We considered the possibility to cover these two systems by the single satellite because it is not efficient to launch highly costed artificial satellites for individual systems separately. In summary, two restrictions are identified: (i) the current specifications of satellite navigation system for civil aviation does not allow using ranging function of QZSS; (ii) TTA (time to alert) of the current design of QZSS is too large for precision approach service.
