Analysis on Mechanism of Dynamic Generation by Discrete-Continuous Coupled Model in Symbolic Communication
Takuma Torii, Takashi Hashimoto (JAIST) NLP2010-36
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Symbolic communication involves both generation and sharing of novel expressions and meanings. In this study, we modeled a communicative agent as a coupled system of a discrete symbolic system and a continuous sense-making system. They are implemented by a rewriting rule system and a neural network, respectively. We conducted computer simulation of communication, in which agents transform symbol sequences (expressions) and generate neural network's dynamics (meanings). We found that novel expressions can be generated by extending application of rewriting rules, and novel meanings can be generated when the neural network shows chaotic behavior. These generations can be evoked each other in this coupled model.
