Hearing-impaired people have difficulties communicating with others even if they wear their hearing aids, especially in a noisy environment. In contrast, normal hearing people have an instinct ability to segregate complexly-mixed sound naturally. The ability has been summarized as the basis of psychoacoustical knowledges called Auditory Scene Analysis (ASA). According to the theory of ASA, fundamental frequency (F0) and its harmonic components are one of the most significant cues to segregate any mixed sound. In this report, a method of speech enhancement for hearing aids is proposed, which is motivated by the concept of the ASA. The method consists of an extraction of F0 from voiced sound and a flexible time-variant comb filter. The results of evaluation showed that the word intelligibility scores were slightly improved under noisy conditions. |
