Temporarily unused frequency bands in the VHF and UHF bands are considered for use on unlicensed basis. The term primary/incumbent user is used to refer to the spectrum owner for example television broadcaster while the term secondary user/network is used to refer to the spectrum user on unlicensed basis. The temporarily unused VHF and UHF frequency bands by the primary/incumbent user are known as television white space (TVWS). The basic premise of such unlicensed use of the TVWS is to maximize the spectrum utilization. However, since the secondary users/networks have equal right among themselves on the use of TVWS, service degradation due to competition to occupy the spectrum would be inevitable. Hence, the intended purpose of unlicensed use of TVWS will not be achieved without addressing the coexistence issue. In this paper we will explore on the core aspects of coexistence issue, its modeling and a potential solution framework using game theoretic approach. |
