[Invited Talk] Who are the users of brain-computer interface?

(in English) Owing to the progress in medicine, more and more people with severe disabilities choose to live in their own home even with artificial ventilation. It is known that assistive communication is important in order to improve their quality of life. Recent advances in neuroscience and rapid growth of computational power have enabled the extraction of brain signals related to free will in real time. This technique is referred to as “brain interface” here and includes character input (communication, brain-computer interface; BCI), environmental control, and machine manipulation (brain-machine interface; BMI). Brain interface has been expected to enable those with the severest disability to communicate with others. In this report, current status of the brain interface is reviewed, and its possible target population and the social system to be implemented are discussed so that this new technology can be used effectively.
