Influence of number of subjects on percentage of correct answers in a psychoacoustical experiment of sound image localization

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Decision of Required Number of Subjects (RNS) to obtain the stable and reliable results in the psychoacoustical experiment to evaluate the sound image localization accuracy, is one of the important issues in the
psychoacoustics. This paper presents new method to decide the RNS by employing the statistical confidence interval computed from the percentage of correct answers obtained from the results that subject responds the relative localization of evaluation stimulus to reference stimulus in the horizontal direction. ITD was used as a parameter
to arrange the presented azimuth of the sound image. The curves to indicate a relation between the number of subjects and the averages of the percentage of correct answers, were considered. There are two types of the curves. One of the curves(decremental curve) is obtained from the data of the percentage of correct answers of all subjects that were sorted in ascending order. Remainder(incremental curve) is obtained from the data that were sorted in descending order. A confidence interval analysis with a confidence level of 95% showed that , for the decremental
curve, 1) the characteristic curve of RNS { averages of the percentage of correct answers is a quadric function with negative gradient, 2) RNS of 32 is needed under the experiment condition with the averages of the percentage of correct answers from 0.50 to 1.00, for the incremental series, 3) RNS slightly depends on the averages of the percentage of correct answers, 4) RNS of 32 is needed under the experiment condition with the averages of the percentage of correct answers from 0.50 to 0.90. From these results, our conclusion is that RNS of 35 is required for
psychoacoustical experiment of the sound image localization.
