This paper proposes a coexistence algorithm that improves the bandwidth efficiency of the TV white spaces (TVWS). Regulations on UHF and VHF bands in countries such as U.S and Canada have been relaxed to improve the usage efficiency of the bandwidth. On the condition of the strict protection of the incumbent services such as TV broadcasting and wireless microphones, some of these bands are opened for communication systems to utilize, IEEE 802.22 WRAN and IEEE 802.11af WLAN for example. However, without good coexistence, these secondary systems may content for bandwidth, which jeopardizes the efficient usage of the bands. Existing coexistence algorithms coordinate the systems in a way that different systems are scheduled on different channels. The methods are straightforward however lack of efficiency and flexibility. This work assumes the WRAN and WLAN systems cooperate in a tightly coupled way to share the bandwidth. The paper proposes a scheduling algorithm based OFDMA that allows WLAN and WPAN systems to coexist on the same channel by using different sub channels. This tightly coupled coexistence algorithm exploits the potential of the single channel rather than involving other channels to solve the coexistence problem. Computer simulations demonstrate the mean user throughput is improved 3dB in both up and down link for the WRAN devices; while the mean user throughput of the WLAN system is also improved 20%. |
