We proposed a flexible polymeric waveguide with a tapered structure, and evaluated its optical characteristics. The core thicknesses at the optical input edge of the waveguides were changed from 90um to 150um. The core thickness decreased continuously from the maximum (90-150um) at the edge to 50um at the uniform region. The length of the tapered region was 45mm. We measured the optical insertion loss with the two kinds of the launching light having primarily low-order modes and high-order modes, respectively. The optical insertion loss with the launching light having high-order modes increased by 0.5dB as compared with a light having low-order modes. However, we observed no big change in the optical insertion loss by introducing the taper region. In addition, we measured the 1dB tolerance for optical coupling which causes excessive loss by 1dB from the minimum insertion loss. The 1dB tolerance was almost similar to the maximum core thickness at the input edge of the waveguide. In conclusion, the proposed waveguide has an advantage both for an easy assembly with optical components and a potential for highly flexible durability, and would be very promising in optical interconnection application. |
