Large Scale FDTD Analysis on Propagation Characteristics of Cellular Radio in Aircraft Cabin

(in English) Recently, some airlines have begun allowing in-flight voice calls. On the other hand, some paper reported that electromagnetic interference (EMI) to aircraft systems from active radio transmitters is possible. The aim of this study is to develop accurate and reliable estimation method of electromagnetic field distributions in aircraft that can contribute to numerical EMI assessment technique. In this report, large-scale numerical simulations are carried out to examine the electromagnetic fields excited by the 800 MHz cellular radio inside an aircraft. We used a typical aircraft model and employed the FDTD technique and a supercomputer to estimate the field distributions inside the whole area of the cabin. Computational result of 1-dimensional electric filed distribution inside the cabin agreed well with measured one. Additionally, in order to estimate polarization characteristics inside aircraft cabin, a cross-polarization ratio (XPR) was evaluated.
