The IEEE 802.11g WLAN standard, which utilizes OFDM modulation, plays an important role in in-door wireless communications due to its high capacity and high speed. However, since OFDM signal consists of a sum of a number of subcarriers with random phase, it has a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Amplifying the signal with high PAPR by power amplifier (PA) either requires large back-off or causes nonlinear distortion. Operating PA with a large back-off results in penalty in terms of amplifier efficiency. On the other hand, out-of-band radiation associated with nonlinear distortion should comply with the spectral mask regulated by the standard. In this paper, we investigate the effect of clipping and filtering on the IEEE 802.11g system in view of improving amplifier efficiency and reveal its limitation. It is shown that if the transmission rate is low, the clipping and filtering improve the system, but it becomes less effective or it even degrades the performance as the transmission rate increases. |
