Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Demand for electric power has been continuously increasing to keep up with the rapid growth of information technologies and the amount of information they deals with. Every enterprise that provides different types of information-based services is now facing a challenge to find ways to cut power use necessary for the delivery of the services. To address this issue, ‘green technologies’ should be developed and applied effectively in many aspects, including power of each piece of equipment, amount of equipment needed for a system to operate, overall power of a machine room that houses large amount of equipment, and so forth. As a telecommunications carrier, NTT West is also committed to reducing power consumption and is actively engaged in developing new technologies, which are the theme of this report.
In the report, an analytical view of our own network’s power usage will be presented first for the purpose of discussing methodological approach in the technology development, since it should be well-adapted in order to create maximum effect. Power reduction could be obtained for two large categories, which are information and communications equipment, such as routers/switches and servers, and machine room facilities, such as power supply systems and air-conditioning (A/C) systems. Some examples of the technologies we are developing are given for each of the categories. Because the way in which A/C systems are operated has a significant impact on overall power in a machine room, their power usage and related techniques to decrease it will be discussed in detail with the help of our experimental results. They will include influence on the overall power by raising A/C systems’ temperature set points and effectiveness of other types techniques, such as the cold air containment method (‘Aisle Capping’).
