Influence on Musical Sound Quality by Bone-conducted Ultrasounds

(in English) Although it is generally accepted that humans cannot perceive sounds in the frequency range above 20 kHz, the existence of “inaudible” high-frequency components affect the acoustic perception of audible sounds [1]. Humans can detect ultrasound up to at least 100 kHz, but perception generally requires direct contact of the source with the head. In our previous paper [2], it can be found that the hearing area at the mastoid is from 0.315 m/s2 (the threshold of audibility) to 100 m/s2 (the threshold of feeling) at 40 kHz. In this paper, it is experimentally discussed whether the existence of bone-conducted ultrasounds may affect the acoustic perception of audible sounds for the gamelan music of Bali recorded in Super Audio CD (SACD), which is extremely rich in high-frequency components. From the results, it can be said that the significant differences were found between sounds with and without the bone-conducted ultrasound components for the gamelan music among the subjective impressions: “spaciousness,” “powerfulness,” “higher tone dominant,” “instruments in imbalance,” “sharpness,” “unpleasantness” and “tiredness.”
