Articulation of Japanese five vowels emphasized formants by a critical bandwidth model

(in English) It can be said that a formant enhancement algorithm for a hearing aid or under a high ambient noise environment is effective. In this report, the contribution of each formant of each vowel was experimentally evaluated. In experiment I, usefulness of a critical bandwidth model using second-order FIR filters was discussed; the effects on speech perception of dynamic filtering with critical band pass filters centered at each formant. In experiment II, each formant of each vowel was carefully extracted by the 150 order FIR filters (MATLAB), the each extracted formant sound was synthesized a high-frequency noise added to the vowel. From the articulation tests, it can be found that each first formant (F1) contributes the articulation score of about 90% of the vowels /u/ and /o/, each second formant (F2) contributes the articulation score of about 95% of the vowels /a/ and /i/, and both the second and third formants of the vowel /e/ are important.
