[Poster Presentation] Facial Expression Differences among Chinese, Japanese and Korean -- A Comparative Analysis using Morphometrics --

(in English) Previous studies have investigated cultural differences of facial expressions between Westerners and Asians and the differences in the interpretation of facial expressions, however few studies have focused on Asian facial expressions and revealed the cultural differences of the expressions per se. This study aims to reveal the cultural differences between straight, happy and angry expressions of Chinese, Japanese and Korean faces using geometric morphometrics. Results showed that on the whole, the straight and angry faces were not clearly different while the straight and happy faces were quite different according to the results of the PCA, whereas, the way of facial expressions were not different significantly among the countries. Further, in the analysis of expressions of each face part, there were significant cross-country differences in the expressions of mouth. The differences between ‘straight’ and ‘angry’ expressions were relatively large for Chinese.
