Scintillation index (SI) is a standard metric for free space optical communications (FSOC) channel noise, and measures the normalised intensity variance caused by atmospheric turbulence. It is a function of the refractive index structure parameter Cn2, range, and receiver aperture. Recently a technique has been demonstrated to characterise the optical channel by measuring the SI of three receivers with different sized apertures. In this paper, we compare experimentally measured SI with a numerical model using phase screens, for a range of aperture diameters. There is good agreement between experiment and the model, demonstrating the latter's efficacy for optical propagation studies. |
