(in English) Many Japanese people have the strong confidence that Japanese science and technology level is very superior. However, the actual situation is different. Japan is delayed in basic science in the USA and the European major countries (UK, Germany, France). Also, Japan is going to be overtaken in China. Japan has top-level technological ability of nanotechnology / material science and environmental areas, along with the USA and European major countries for the present. But Japan is weak, in the areas of electronics, information and telecommunication technology, life science, clinical science etc, in comparison with the USA and European major countries. The reason is that Japan is surpassed in research and development expenditure and human resources in comparison with the USA, European major countries, and China. Japan is also delayed by the reform of research and development system. I would like to explain the present situation of the Japanese science and technology based on data. I also would like to mention how we should do for the Japanese science and technology.
