Performance Analysis of CSMA/CA Protocol in Long Distance Wireless Access

(in English) The use of wireless access networks, particularly such as IEEE 802.11 wireless access networks, is a economically promising method to bridge the digital divide between urban areas and rural and isolated areas. This paper analyzes the throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance~(CSMA/CA) protocol with a large propagation delay. The increase of a propagation delay results in decrease of uplink and downlink throughputs. A Markov chain model is used to analyze throughput performance of the IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA binary exponential backoff algorithm, and this analysis includes the impacts of propagation delay. It is shown that short-term unfairness occurs according to the increase of the propagation delay, and it contributes to throughputs improvement.
