Site Specific Interference Estimation for Advanced Spectrum Management in Cognitive Radio Systems over White Space Spectrum

(in English) Spectrum management is one of essential functions for cognitive radio systems operating in white space spectrum bands in order to avoid causing harmful interference to primary systems. This function plays a role on deciding frequency band and allowable transmit power for the cognitive radio systems. In this process, radio propagation estimation is used to cognize the interference level to the primary systems. In a case that the estimation accuracy is low, the cognitive radio systems will be required to have a large margin in their allowable transmit power. This results in the loss of opportunities for white space utilization. In this paper, we propose an advanced spectrum management scheme by using site-specific interference estimation. A system configuration to realize our proposed method is also described. Our simulation results using the actual terrain information indicate that the proposed method allows to increase the transmit power of the secondary systems by about 15dB without increasing the interference level to the primary systems.
