The Internet spread worldwide since the latter half of the 1990's. The communication contents started from a character base. They are gradually including voices, still pictures, movies and high definition videos into them. As a results, the contents becomes huge in data size. The communication traffic keeps increasing explosively along with it, and a large capacity communication network infrastructure has been provided with dramatically advanced wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication technology. Recently, not only the increase of the network capacity and the decrease of the communication cost, but also the decrease of the electric power consumption is urgently required, since the environmental problems such as global warming become aggravated. Photonic node and photonic network technologies are paid to attention as a technology that can achieve a large-capacity, low-cost and low-power-consumption communication network infrastructure based on the WDM technology. This presentation describes a general view of technology trends while looking back on the author's own research and development, and also describes the future perspective about the technological development direction. |
