Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is currently in the finalization stage of LTE Release 10 (LTE-Advanced). With the introduction of new advanced features, e.g., carrier aggregation, higher-order MIMO, etc., LTE-Advanced provides higher system performance compared to LTE Release 8 while at the same time satisfies ITU-R requirements. Nevertheless, continuous evolution of mobile technology is needed to respond to future market demands. Recently, unprecedented market trends were observed. High-spec handsets, in particular smartphones, are proliferating and mobile video image delivery/streaming and more new innovative applications are reaching more and more customers. In the coming decade, mobile data traffic is expected to grow at a pace that exceeds our past experiences. Therefore, drastic improvement of system performance is necessary in the future.
In this talk, we outline DOCOMO views on LTE enhancements focusing mainly on Release 11 as well as on future radio access towards 2020. For Release 11 and LTE enhancements, candidate concepts and major features/topics to be specified or studied are presented. For future radio access towards 2020, target requirements are provided based on the results of market trends analysis and forecast of future traffic growth. In particular, we set the requirements for future radio access to meet our estimate of data traffic growth in the order of 500 – 1000 times today’s traffic. Potential technical solutions to respond to such explosive growth are introduced with our views on the contribution share of each solution. Specifically, inter-cell optimization assisted with future receiver devices is proposed as a key driver for future radio interface.
