Theoretical Study on Power Efficient MIMO Transmission and Operating Frequency Towards Green Radio

(in English) This paper presents theoretical study on power-efficient MIMO transmission and operating frequency for green radio. It is well known that propagation loss becomes large with increase of operating frequency assuming a fixed number of antennas at both transmitter and receiver.
Since the physical size of antenna element or radio frequency (RF) circuit is proportional to wavelength for operation, a larger number of antennas can be arranged within a constant size at higher frequency. In this paper, we study relationship between required transmit power and operating frequency, assuming antenna array in a constant size. Our theoretical study reveals that the transmit power required to satisfy a certain signal quality can be reduced with increase of operating frequency assuming antenna array in a constant size. This relationship
leads to a new property that milliwave can realize more power-efficient wireless transmission than microwave. In order to use this property, implementation of high density antenna array or accurate transmit beamforming with a huge number of antennas will become key issues towards future green radio.
