Acoustic analysis of ill-articulated speech by elderly speakers

(in English) This study aims at investigating acoustic features of elderly speakers’ ill-articulated utterances, which cause non-briskness subjectively. In general, it is difficult for elderly people to tune aging articulators accurately. In this paper, we investigate the relationship among subjective degrees of non-briskness, speaker ages, and prospective physical parameters, which are extracted from elderly speakers’ utterances.
We prepare three kinds of the physical acoustic parameters: the transition velocity and the transition distance in amplitude spectra between neighboring phonemes, and the Euclidean distances among vowels on the F1-F2 space.
As the results, subjective non-brisk voice gave the smaller transition distance and the smaller distances among vowels on the F1-F2 space. The transition velocity also decreased in proportion to the speaker’s age. It is supposed that the elderly might speak more slowly than non-elderly adults in order to gain the enough amount of spectral transition between neighboring phonemes. In other words, elderly speakers tend to improve subjective briskness by slowly speaking.
