Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We see the edge and surface of objects in the 3D visual world. Research has revealed the mechanisms of the edge detection in the visual system. However, little is known about the mechanisms of surface perception. It is thought that a surface is formed by the propagation of disparity information to places without disparity. The present study tested this idea by conducting two experiments. In the first experiment, we measured luminance contrast sensitivity for surface perception as a function of propagation distances and spatial frequencies. In the second experiment, we quantitatively assessed the apparent configuration of surfaces and the perceptual stability of surfaces by measuring the normal direction and tangent point of surfaces. The results show that contrast sensitivity for surface perception is reduced according to stimulus distance and spatial frequency, and that the normal directions of the surfaces are overestimated and the tangent points are located far from actual positions when increasing the stimulus distance. Further, the results indicate that the perception of surface tends to be unstable when the propagation distance is longer.
