[Special Talk] Frontiers of Music Information Processing
Masataka Goto (AIST) PRMU2010-134
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this talk, I introduce the research field of music information processing by showing some examples of our research on Active Music Listening interfaces and Singing Information Processing systems. I conclude by discussing unsolved problems and challenges. The importance of music information processing has been widely recognized, and the attention it receives is attracting an increasing number of researchers to work in the field. The music signal is a mixture of multiple sounds whose temporal relationships convey musical content, and such a complex mixture has not been tackled in the fields of speech and image processing. Both the automatic understanding of such a signal and its automatic generation are difficult tasks that have been solved only partially. The grand challenge is to develop technologies that can automatically understand music by describing its phenomena, and use this understanding to generate music. The field is also attractive because there are other unsolved essential challenges, such as how to provide the best music for each person, how to enrich human-music relationships, and how to push new music evolution forward. In the future, music information processing technologies, together with speech and image processing technologies, are expected to contribute toward integrated media processing technologies covering diverse media content.
