[Invited Talk] Future challenges in perpendicular magnetic recording for terabit recording

(in English) Perpendicular magnetic recording and highly sensitive GMR/TMR read head overcame the 100 Gbit/in2 and brings continuous progress of areal density. For next generation magnetic recording, some proposals such as shingled recording, energy assisted recording, and bit patterned media recording, have been made. The areal density progress will be continued with a growth rate of 130-150% per year, which will attain 5-30 Tbit/inch2 within 10 years. Discussions for 100 Tbit/in2 may not be unrealistic. The essential point is the media structure. Evolution to a new media structure will open new recording technologies which is free from the current grain size limit. At the stage writing gradient and uniformity of switching field should be investigated in order to achieve 10 Tbit/in2. Thermal instability of recording bits will be again come up as the key parameter of the high density recording.
