Traffic is increasing rapidly in radio communication networks with the spread of e.g. smart phones, in such a way that it becomes about 200 times larger in 10 years. In order to accommodate such rapidly increasing traffic in radio communication networks, increase of spectrum utilization efficiency, expansion of available frequency bandwidth, and additional deployment of many radio base stations are required. On the other hand, it is favorable that increase of cost for deployment and operation and energy consumption will be avoided.
In this talk, the way to cope with this challenge is presented. As examples of technologies for this challenge, firstly a technology to promote the use of femto-cells is presented. In the technology, the interference from femto-cells to macro-cells is limited to a certain degree even when they use common frequency. Secondly research activities concerning SON (Self-Organizing Network) are presented, with which cost for deployment and operation of radio communication networks is reduced. Also, energy-saving technologies in radio base stations are presented, in which power consumption is reduced in the standby state i.e. when no terminal is connected to radio base stations. Lastly, technologies to increase opportunities to utilize frequency are presented concerning cognitive radio technologies which expand available frequency bandwidth. |
