In this study we explore roles of silence with verbal/nonverbal filler-cues on turn-taking in dyadic conversations by using conversation analysis. A dyadic-conversation between two undergraduate women was videotaped. The filler-cues among silence situations in the conversation are analyzed with a specific focus on the relationship with turn-takings. The analysis of turn-takings indicates that the speaker’s utterance-final state prior to the silences do not decide next speakers. These results suggest that silences between utterances had weakened rights of utterance among participants. Further analysis of filler-cues in silence situations demonstrate that the expression of vocalized fillers tend to decide next speakers whereas the behavioral fillers do not.
