Changes in the terminal frequency (TF; the end frequency of downward FM sweep) of echolocation pulses were investigated by using Telemike for two FM bat species (Pipistrellus abramus and Miniopterus fuliginosus) in a cluttered environment. P. abramus emitted pulses in pairs (strobe group) with 20-40 ms interpulse intervals (IPIs), which occasionally created pulse-echo ambiguity. When overlap occurred, variation of the $ \delta $F was significantly increased to 5-6 kHz (F-test, P < 0.001). On the other hand, M. fuliginosus never emitted pulses in a strobe group. Since IPIs were always adjusted to be longer than ESD, echo streams were not overlapped. These comparative results indicate that by shifting TF within successive pulses, P. abramus separate between their own echo streams to avoid pulse-echo ambiguity. Our findings also suggest that echolocation strategy in the cluttered environment may be different between bat species. |
