Medial Axis for the Cortical Representation of 3D Shape

(in English) The representation of shape in visual cortex is a fundamental problem in vision science. Physiological studies on monkeys have suggested the representation by two-dimensional medial axis (2D MA) in the primary visual cortex (V1). Binocular fusion that begins from V1 has been reported to yield the representation of three-dimensional (3D) shape based on surfaces in higher visual areas. It appears that the 2D MAs for the left and right retinal images are determined independently in V1 and the 3D MA is computed from the fusion of the two 2D MAs. To investigate the plausibility of this hypothesis, we developed a computational model based on the visual neural system and observed the behavior of the model. The model reconstructed successfully 3D shape from various objects including those from natural images with simple, parallel computations. The result suggests the plausibility of the hypothesis and the importance of further investigation on the shape representation by 3D MA that is computed from the two 2D MAs.
