Fanctional significance of the isthmo-optic system in visual search

(in English) There are centrifugal systems to the retina in the vertebrate visual system. Particularly birds have the most well-developed retinopetal systems. Multidisciplinary researches revealed that the IO system may function as a local and transient gain enhancer of retinal output. The system is suggested to be involved in emergence of selective spatial attention. In this study, we revealed that lesions of the retinopetal nucleus (isthmo-optic nucleus) impair target selection for visually guided beak-reaching. Thus, the IO system may subserve target selection for visually guided orienting and reaching of birds.
