Neuronal mechanisms of syntactic reanalysis studied by auditory event-related potentials

(in English) Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies of linguistic processing have found the N400 component for semantically incongruent sentences and the LAN (ELAN) and P600 components for syntactically incongruent sentences. The P600-like positive shift was also observed for garden-path sentences, which impose high syntactic loading on subjects. However, these findings were obtained by a visually-presented, word-by-word sentence and little is known about ERPs elicited by a continuously spoken sentence. In this study, we measured ERPs elicited by auditorily-presented Japanese garden-path sentences and examined the neuronal mechanisms of syntactic reanalysis. While previous studies observed a significant positive shift immediately after a target word (phrase) triggered syntactic reanalysis, the present results did not find such a positive shift at the timing of the target. On the other hand, this study showed an enhancement of negative and positive components in front-central and central positions after the end of the garden-path sentence. The present results indicate that brain activities involving an update of speech recognition by syntactic reanalysis may appear even after the perception of whole a sentence.
