Energy-efficient PON system with a 1Gbps/10Gbps independent and adaptive link rate control

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) 10G-EPON (10Gigabit-Ethrenet Passive Optical Network) has been standardized for the increase in the access traffic. The 10G-EPON has consumed more energy than GPON does. To reduce energy consumption of PON, ALR (Adaptive Link Rate), which changes the link rate of transceivers from 10 Gbps to 1Gbps and vise versa, according to the incoming traffic, has been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we propose an independent and adaptive link rate control for a 1Gbps/10Gbps hybrid PON, where the low-power 1Gbps transceivers are maximally used even when incoming traffic reaches the given threshold. We show effectiveness of our proposed method in terms of energy efficiency.
