In this work, dependency of RF performances of the transmission line employing periodically perforated ground metal (PPGM) on GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) with various ground condition was investigated. Concretely, insertion loss characteristics of the transmission line employing PPGM with various ground condition were investigated. According to measured results, the RF characteristics of the transmission lines employing PPGM structure were hardly affected by the ground condition in the frequency lower than Ku band. In the frequency higher than Ku band, however, they were seriously affected by the ground condition, which resulted from the parasitic inductance of via holes. Of all transmission lines with various ground conditions, coplanar waveguide without a via hole showed best RF performance. For microstrip line employing PPGM, many via holes were required as much as possible, because the parasitic inductance is inversely proportional to the number of via holes. According to our investigation, four via holes were required for a transmission line with a length of 1 mm at least. |
