A Novel Feeding Circuit with Switching Function of Cardioid and Figure of Eight Radiation Patterns

(in English) In diversity and MIMO applications, pattern reconfigurable techniques are required because the propagation path of a radio wave can be changed. Previously, switched-beam antennas based on the Butler matrix was proposed. However, the purpose was to switch the beam direction, and the shapes of the beams could not be changed. In this report, we propose a novel feeding circuit with switching function of cardioid and figure of
eight radiation patterns. The basic structures of the proposed circuit are combinations of the 90 and 180 degree hybrid circuits, and both pattern shapes and directions are changed by switching feeding elements and phase difference feeds. We show the amplitude and phase characteristics of the output signal obtained by the proposed feeding circuit. Then, we reveal that cardioid and figure of eight radiation patterns are achieved when mutual coupling effects are suppressed sufficiently. Even if the effects are not suppressed, uni-directional with F/B ratio of more than 10 dB and bi-directional radiation patterns are obtained.
