Decision Tree Based Flow Search Hardware Engine Combined with Linear Search

(in English) Recently, multi-field packet classification is increasingly becoming more important to enable fine-grained flow control for high performance routers and switches. Although Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) is widely adopted for this purpose, alternative flow search engines for multi-field packet classification are desirable due to TCAM's large power consumption.
This paper presents a novel architecture for a low-power flow search engine. It comprises a combination of decision tree based pipelines using general-purpose memories and linear search pipelines that prevent copying entries in the decision tree based pipelines. The evaluation result also shows that the hardware implementation of our architecture archives power reduction by up to 92% compared to TCAM.
