Study of Polarization control function by Photonic Element

(in English) We have been investigating various optical functionalities utilizing photonic elements, which are small, regularly arranged scattering parts of the order of a wavelength of light. The coherent and anisotropic light scattering by the photonic elements will enable controlling of state of polarization and directivity of radiation. In this paper, we deal with cylinder-shaped silicon photonic elements embedded in SiO2 and its polarization controlling characteristics. Results of both theoretical and numerical analysis have revealed that such a class of elements was capable of adjusting the phase difference of a pair of orthogonal linear polarizations if their diameters and positions are appropriately designed.
