Prosodic Analysis of Telephone Numbers Uttered by Native and Non-Native Speakers of Japanese

(in English) In order to develop a foreign accent identification system, we compared the prosodic structures of Japanese telephone numbers uttered by native speakers of Japanese (NS) and non-native speakers (NNS; native speakers of Chinese). We compared the fundamental frequency (F0) patterns by observing the F0 contours and found that the prosodic structure specific to Japanese telephone numbers were realised in utterances of NS, but not in those of NNS. We also calculated the cosine similarity of F0 patterns between the NS average and each utterance. The results showed that the mean similarity of the NS was 0.91 (S.D. = 0.04), whereas that of NNS was 0.60 (S.D. = 0.20).
