An Experimental Evaluation of IEEE 802.11n Rate Adaptation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) IEEE 802.11n brings in a significant increase in data transmission rates for the PHY and MAC layer function of wireless LANs (WLANs). The 802.11n rate adaptation in the ath9k driver for Atheros chipsets often causes big throughput degradations against the best fixed rate, since the configuration of the ath9k rate control does not take into account the complicated 802.11n modulation and coding schemes. In this study, we propose an approach for 802.11n rate adaptation to simplify rate adaptation. This approach determines whether to utilize single stream transmission or dual stream transmission based on measured RSSI for each of the antennas before seeking the optimum rate. The validity of this approach is experimentally investigated. It is shown that the proposed 802.11n rate adaptation is capable of choosing the right modulation scheme without any big throughput degradations.
