Measurement of the Changes in Brain Activity During Rehearsal of Auditory Sequence by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

(in English) The purpose of this study was to investigate where and how the brain is activated when it attend to auditory sequence or tone color by Near-infrared Spectroscopy(NIRS).Activity of the brain was measured at around temporal cortex of the left hemisphere. Subjects were presented six kinds of Morse code by six kinds of tone color. There were three kinds of task for subjects. At the Task1, subjects attended to only sequences of Morse code, and ignored tone color. At the Task2, subjects attended to only tone color, and ignored Morse codes. At the Task3, subjects counted Morse codes with only one digit number. It was as a control task to compare with Task1 and Task2. As a result, at the Task3, [Oxy-Hb] increased only at around auditory area, however, at the Task1, increased not only at auditory area but also at Broca’s area. At the Task2, [Oxy-Hb] increased not only at auditory area but also at wide range of temporal cortex. Signal averaging of the [Oxy-Hb] was also done to evaluate the latency in activation. As a result, [Oxy-Hb] was activated most in the Task2. And, it showed that Task1 and Task3 increased [Oxy-Hb] immediately after on-set of sounds, and decreased it immediately after off-set of presented sounds. But at the Task2 there were lag time to change [Oxy-Hb]. It indicated that there are differences if the manner of increasing and decreasing in [Oxy-Hb] according to tasks.
