Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Using intrinsic signal optical imaging, it has been confirmed that in the visual cortex of kittens that experienced a single orientation through cylindrical-lens goggles, cortical domains selectively responsive to the experienced orientation expanded with a sensitive period. To elucidate how the onset time of single-orientation experience affects the orientation map alteration, we carried out computer simulations based on our model for the self-organization of geniculocortical inputs. First, we conducted simulation assuming only spontaneous activities in the LGN, which represents a developmental condition before eye opening. Next, using the map established before eye opening as an initial map, we performed simulations by presenting 12 oriented gratings to the model retina, which represents a normal visual condition after eye opening. The arrangement of preferred orientations was found to become more regular and orientation selectivity was enhanced as the simulation step. Finally, simulations assuming a single orientation exposure for a fixed period immediately after the normal visual experience showed that the expansion of cortical domains for the experienced orientation decreased with the simulation step of the normal visual experience. Taken together, it was demonstrated that our model can well reproduce the qualitative features of orientation maps in goggle-reared kittens.
