In a bird monitoring system, a IC tag (termed Toki-tag) with GPS device, various sensors, and low-power radio transceiver, is attached to the bird body. Location information of the bird is transmitted at regular interval using the ground base stations. In order to know the location of the bird in real-time, the period of GPS positioning needs to be shorted. However, power consumption increases with increasing number of GPS positioning, resulting in shorter life of the Toki-tag. Long life of the Toki-tag can be realized with longer GPS positioning period when the bird is stationary due to rest or sleep, while with longer positioning period only when bird is flying. In this study, it is shown that GPS and barometer can be used to effectively distinguish between flying and resting and an algorithm of detecting flying or resting is proposed. |
